Don't Hazard a Guess

For those who have to work with chemicals, the hazards can be very painful, ranging from various degrees of skin irritation to chemical burns. The possibility of these injuries makes it critical to ensure all workers within an organization have the appropriate PPE. The multitude of chemicals, substances, and concentrates that may be used can make it difficult for anyone to know for sure which chemical resistant gloves provide the protection required for a given job or application.

The EN 374 test helps determine a glove’s sustainability against a particular chemical. In short, a given glove is exposed to a particular chemical and is evaluated based on the time it takes from the glove’s exposure to the chemical, to when it shows penetration (leakage) and/or permeation (absorption) of the chemical. Based on the time elapsed before penetration or permeation, it will receive a score of 0-6 as shown on the scale below.

Any glove that has received a score of 2 or higher for at least 3 different chemicals earns the EN374 shield. The shield will be accompanied by the corresponding letters of the chemicals the glove could withstand for 30 minutes or longer.

Chemical Protection Selector Guide

PIP has compiled our test results and developed a program that helps you quickly and easily identify which potential solutions we may have available. You can search by chemical name or CAS# to see which of our gloves have been tested against that particular chemical and the score it achieved.

You can review a glove you are already using or are considering, and see which chemicals it has been tested against and how it scored on the EN 374 test.

Once you have identified the glove(s) you would like to trial for the application you are evaluating, request samples to conduct your own testing. While the EN 374 provides a good guide to help direct you to an appropriate selection, the test is a controlled evaluation that may not completely reflect the conditions and variables you and/or your workers are exposed to. Ultimately, it’s the end user’s responsibility to determine the glove’s sustainability for their particular environment and application.
